The outer layer of the eye (tunica externa bulbi) has three main functions:

1. It is supposed to give resistance to the intraocular pressure
2. It is supposed to protect the eye
3. It is supposed to be a place where the muscles will attach themselves.

The outer layer of the eye has a form of a ball, and is consisted of two parts: sclera and cornea.
